History of Galpin's Horseless Carriage

A One-of-a-Kind Dining Experience
Since 1966
Since 1966
For nearly six decades, Galpin’s Horseless Carriage has been much more than a restaurant. It’s been a Southern California landmark. Opened in 1966, the Horseless Carriage was part of Galpin Motors’ groundbreaking vision for a better automotive experience. When buying or servicing a vehicle meant waiting in a lobby, Galpin introduced something no other dealership had offered: a full-service restaurant where guests could relax, enjoy a quality meal, and feel right at home.
When Galpin Motors moved to its new Roscoe Boulevard campus, known as Galpin Square, the dealership became the first in the nation to feature a full-service restaurant inside an automotive dealership. This innovative concept reflected founder Bert Boeckmann’s philosophy that customers deserved exceptional hospitality, not just exceptional service. It was a revolutionary idea that helped redefine what a dealership experience could be.

A Valley Favorite for Generations
What began as a convenience for Galpin customers quickly became a destination in its own right. Families, local residents, business professionals, and automotive enthusiasts discovered the Horseless Carriage’s welcoming atmosphere, generous portions, and classic American comfort food.
Over the years, countless celebrations, business lunches, weekend breakfasts, and everyday meals have been shared within its booths. Many guests who first visited as children now bring their own families, making the restaurant a cherished tradition across generations.

More Than a Dealership Restaurant
The Horseless Carriage has always stood apart from the ordinary. While most dealership cafés serve quick snacks or coffee, Galpin’s Horseless Carriage was designed as a true full-service restaurant with an extensive menu, friendly service, and an inviting dining room.
Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner whether they’re shopping for a vehicle, waiting for service, or simply looking for a great local restaurant. That commitment to quality and hospitality has remained unchanged since opening day in 1966.
